The Society of Saint Thomas More in Florence is a group of young adults who have chosen to come together in order to foster a greater love and learning of Jesus Christ and the Catholic faith and act as a moral support for each other. In our active participation in spiritual and cultural and social functions, Christ's commandment on loving God and neighbor is made manifest.
Most of the members of this society are laypersons, consisting of university students, interns and professionals. At times, we as human beings tend to lose our focus in life, which is to live in harmony with God and his people. For this reason, Saint Thomas More was chosen as our patron. As a layman, he held what was perhaps the most envied post in the Royal court of England, Lord Chancellor. This post was always previously held by high ranking clerics. In his love for God and the Church, More, under pressure from King Henry VIII to compromise his moral conscience, resigned his office and accepted the trials and tribulations of the world, rather than seek its pleasures and short gratifications. With his conscience being in conformity with God, he endured martyrdom and thus inherited eternal life. More is not just an intercessor but an example and inspiration for us all: to choose God first.
Our community is open to Catholics and non-Catholics alike with the hope that we can come together and learn what Christ and his Church continue to offer us. In turn, we hope to continue to develop those individual gifts he gave us and contribute to the common good of society.
